Shot-down helicopter keychains fund Chornobyl mine removal for Stalker 2 studio
In a powerful collaboration bridging the digital and the real, studio GSC Game World has joined forces with the Ukrainian charity United24 to launch a vital initiative aimed at clearing the explosive hazards of the real-world Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.
This ambitious fundraising effort seeks to raise $100,000 to support critical efforts to remove mines and other explosive devices from the highly hazardous area, a region defined by its history as one of the most radioactively contaminated zones on the planet.
The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, established in 1986 following the catastrophic nuclear disaster at the power plant, remains a place of profound scientific interest, but it is also fraught with danger. Facilities within the Zone require constant maintenance, a challenge amplified when the area faced conflict. Following the invasion of Ukraine, the Zone and its facilities were seized by Russian troops, and the subsequent withdrawal left behind a perilous legacy of unexploded ordnance.
United24 estimates that since the Russian departure, at least eight explosions have wounded or killed staff and soldiers, highlighting the immediate threat posed by the remaining landmines and explosives to returning workers and researchers.
The work of demining is not merely a logistical task; it is a mission centered on safety. As Ihor Bezkaravainyi, from Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy and Environment, emphasized, the primary goal is ensuring the safety of the people who work in the Zone daily—scientists and energy workers. This includes creating safe routes for firefighting and rescue teams to operate without risking their lives from hidden mines.
The necessity of this work is underscored by global statistics. In 2025, the United Nations reported that civilian injuries and deaths caused by landmines had reached their highest level in four years, largely due to funding shortfalls for demining efforts. Clearing these dangers is, quite simply, the greatest reward.
