Sony reviving Killzone
For years, Sony navigated a tricky path, attempting to integrate new live-service games into its first-party lineup. This ambition led to projects like Concord and various multiplayer spin-offs that ultimately fizzled out, including those related to God of War and The Last of Us.
Now, however, the focus seems to be shifting. Sony appears to be channeling its multiplayer development efforts toward a franchise that truly makes sense: Killzone.
A new report indicates that a fresh Killzone game is already in the very early stages of development. The project is being overseen by Guerrilla Games, while an external studio is handling the bulk of the development work, setting the stage for a focused revival.
This strategic move allows Guerrilla to concentrate on other major titles, such as Horizon Hunters Gathering, which is currently demanding most of the studio’s resources and contributing to delays for future entries like Horizon 3.
Killzone built a solid following during the mid-2000s, but the series ultimately got overshadowed by massive competitors like Halo and Call of Duty. The last major installment, Killzone: Shadow Fall, launched on the PS4 in 2013 and maintained an active community, but the franchise subsequently entered a period of dormancy.
The revival promises a different direction. While previous titles leaned more toward the single-player experience, expectations suggest that a revamped Killzone will feature a significantly stronger multiplayer focus, delivering the kind of intense, competitive gameplay fans crave.
While the specific partnership details remain under wraps, there are strong indications regarding potential collaborators. People Can Fly, the studio behind the successful Outriders, has previously been rumored to be collaborating with Sony on upcoming projects, suggesting a possible connection to the Killzone development.
This potential alignment could inject fresh energy and proven expertise into the project, signaling a serious effort to bring the legendary shooter franchise back to life in a modern, competitive context.
