Sony’s new ad highlights PS5 exclusivity
The landscape of multi-platform gaming is undergoing a subtle but significant shift, as Sony appears to be drawing a clear line between its console exclusives and the wider PC and competitive gaming markets. After years of experimenting with bringing some of its titles to other systems, the company seems to be embracing a renewed focus on exclusivity, signaling a deliberate return to the PlayStation 5‘s unique appeal.
This strategic pivot is reflected in the updated marketing strategy. For many years, Sony’s titles were marketed with the simple declaration, “only on PlayStation”. However, as the platform expanded its reach, the messaging evolved into the more enigmatic “It Happens on PS5”, acknowledging the cross-platform reality.
Now, with reports suggesting a pull back on PC plans for single-player games, Sony has launched a fresh, focused campaign: “Only on PS5”. This move makes sense, as it aligns the promotional focus directly with the console experience, prioritizing the unique ecosystem of the PS5 over broader multi-platform ambitions.
The new campaign uses bold language to highlight the content available exclusively on the console. A promotional video, structured like a high-energy ad, features a diverse lineup of flagship titles, including Ghost of Yotei, Gran Turismo 7, Astro Bot, Marvel’s Wolverine, God of War Laufey, and SAROS.
While the campaign pushes the exclusive nature of the games, it also playfully attempts to merge the old and new branding. The video concludes by juxtaposing the new tagline with the previous slogan, “It Happens on PS5”, suggesting a blend of current exclusivity with past platform association.
This return to stricter exclusivity follows a history of inconsistent multi-platform decisions. Past titles, like Gran Turismo 7, were anticipated to reach PC but ultimately remained console exclusives, underscoring the difficulty in maintaining broad cross-platform deals. Sony’s current approach suggests a commitment to fortifying the PS5 as a distinct and compelling gaming destination.
The implication of this shift is clear: Sony is choosing to concentrate its creative and marketing energy on the console experience. Whether this strategy proves more successful in cementing platform loyalty or simply reaffirms the PS5’s unique market position remains to be seen.
