Ubisoft cancels Far Cry multiplayer spin-off

The landscape of open-world shooters is constantly evolving, but sometimes those shifts involve major creative pivots. Recently, rumors have circulated regarding multiple new projects within the Far Cry universe, with one particularly exciting prospect being a return to the extraction shooter genre. However, it seems that Ubisoft has made a definitive call, steering away from that specific direction.

Ubisoft has officially cancelled its planned Far Cry extraction shooter spin-off. This decision signals a change in creative focus for the studio, moving away from a trend that has seen fluctuating popularity across the gaming world.

Instead of pursuing that particular concept, Ubisoft is channeling its development energy into a new multiplayer venture codenamed Kodiak. This new project is being hailed as an ambitious undertaking, reportedly prioritizing player interactions and compelling player-driven stories at its core, promising a fresh take on competitive gameplay.

This strategic shift comes as the studio juggles several major titles simultaneously. While developing Kodiak, Ubisoft is also pushing forward with its next mainline installment in the series, Far Cry 7, which has been internally dubbed Blackbird.

This pattern of development choices reflects a broader trend. Over the past few years, Ubisoft has reportedly greenlit and subsequently cancelled numerous multiplayer projects across various franchises, including titles like The Division, other Far Cry spin-offs, and entirely new IPs such as XDefiant.

Game development is an exercise in risk and reward, and sometimes the most successful path is letting go of what didn’t quite fit. Whether it is refining existing universes or pursuing completely new interactive experiences, Ubisoft appears determined to deliver ambitious, high-impact content for its players.
