Ubisoft ditches Connect launcher for Steam

For years, PC gamers have wrestled with a persistent frustration: the barrier between Steam and the game itself. The standalone launcher, while functional, often felt like an unnecessary middleman—adding extra steps, dragging down startup times, and occasionally causing login headaches. Today, a major publisher is finally addressing this pain point, ushering in a genuinely streamlined experience for its players.

Ubisoft has quietly made one of its biggest system changes in years, testing a groundbreaking approach on Steam. Starting with titles like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the publisher is rolling out a new system that delivers all the core benefits of the Ubisoft Connect ecosystem without demanding players install or launch the traditional Ubisoft Connect PC launcher at all.

This new framework, dubbed “Ubisoft Connect Services,” keeps all the crucial features intact. This means cross-progression, cross-play capabilities, reward systems, and other account-linked functions remain fully accessible. The only thing that has been removed is the cumbersome need for a separate application to manage these features.

Ubisoft describes this initial rollout as “an initial step toward a smoother and more streamlined launch experience on Steam.” It’s a welcome change, effectively removing an unnecessary layer of complexity that often felt like an obstacle rather than a convenience.

The shift represents a significant step in how Ubisoft manages its presence on the PC platform. Instead of forcing users to navigate a separate application, the focus moves directly to the game itself, creating a more intuitive and fluid interaction with the games they love.

While the launcher is not vanishing entirely, this evolution signals a major embrace of the Steam ecosystem. This move positions Ubisoft to integrate better with the platform that millions of gamers already rely on for distribution and management.

The rollout is set to be a gradual process. Ubisoft plans to progressively evolve this system, rolling it out to more of its titles over time. Gamers can expect to see this improved experience in major upcoming releases, including titles like Rainbow Six Siege and Assassin’s Creed.

This initiative is more than just a technical update; it’s about prioritizing the player experience. By streamlining the interface, Ubisoft is ensuring that players can jump straight into the action, leaving the administrative tasks behind. It’s a testament to the idea that sometimes, the best way to improve a gaming experience is by removing the unnecessary friction.
