Witcher Remake paused for Witcher 3 and Witcher 4 updates
The sprawling world of Geralt of Rivia continues to inspire, but behind the scenes, the development of The Witcher Remake is taking a fascinating detour. CD Projekt has confirmed that the project is currently being integrated into the larger scope of work on The Witcher 4, marking a strategic pivot for the studio’s ambitious goals.
In a recent statement, Fool’s Theory explained that the team is prioritizing the development of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past. While this expansion is currently the main focus, a smaller contingent of the team is assisting with work on The Witcher 4, positioning the remake in a waiting period.
This pause is not merely a delay; it’s a necessary foundational shift. The primary hurdle stems from the massive technological transition the studio is undertaking. To build the next epic installment, CD Projekt is moving away from the RED Engine and transitioning to Unreal Engine. The development of The Witcher 4 is now defining the baseline for how the entire series will operate within the new Unreal framework.
Consequently, for the remake to fully resume, it needs the essential assets, robust tools, and established pipelines that are being built for the new, larger project. It’s essentially waiting for the infrastructure of the next Witcher saga to be fully laid out before it can be fully built.
This strategic refocus allows the studio to consolidate its efforts, ensuring that the foundational work for the next major title is robust and well-defined. The vision remains intact—a grand reimagining of the Witcher saga—but the roadmap is being adjusted to build a more stable and technologically advanced future for the franchise.
