CD Projekt cuts 20% of Witcher spinoff team
The world of game development is currently grappling with corporate restructuring, as CD Projekt has confirmed recent layoffs impacting its efforts on the ambitious Project Sirius. The studio announced that nine employees working on the spinoff project have been let go, citing a necessary adjustment to the team size to match the project’s current development needs.
This reshuffling affects teams across the company, with four employees departing from Boston and five from Warsaw. While these cuts represent a tangible reduction in personnel for Sirius, the company also invited nine remaining team members to internal recruitment processes for potential roles on other CD Projekt Red projects.
The story of Project Sirius is rooted in a history of ambitious, sprawling development. The initiative began when CD Projekt acquired The Molasses Flood in 2021 with the goal of developing an expansive new game based on existing intellectual property. At the time, the plan was for the acquired entity to maintain its own distinct identity, a goal that shifted as the studio fully absorbed The Molasses Flood into its structure.
Despite the internal evolution, Project Sirius has faced its share of hurdles. Following initial development troubles, the project underwent a reboot and received an updated direction. Five years after the acquisition, the details surrounding the game remain largely elusive; even its official title has yet to be revealed.
This uncertainty highlights the often-unpredictable nature of large-scale game development. While the company navigates internal changes, the external focus remains on delivering a cohesive and compelling experience for fans. The recent adjustments underscore the ongoing efforts required to manage large, complex creative projects in today’s demanding industry.
