After years of ambition, a somewhat shaky launch, and a noticeable lack of overall momentum, the future of Riot’s tag fighter 2XKO has been decided. The studio has announced the shutdown of future development for the title after this year, accompanied by refunds for those who made in-game purchases up to that point.
This decision comes after Riot admitted they simply could not find the necessary momentum to keep the game sustainable. The sentiment was echoed by co-founder Marc Merrill during a recent discussion, underscoring the challenging reality of maintaining a live service game in today’s saturated gaming environment.
When pressed about the development process, Merrill acknowledged that while the outcome was disappointing, he wouldn’t characterize 2XKO itself as a mistake. He maintained that the intention and desire to serve the fighting game community were present from the start, driven by the shared vision of the developers and Rioters.
The journey of 2XKO, however, highlighted the monumental difficulty of competing in the live service space. Merrill pointed out that launching a free-to-play title in a world where tens of thousands of games are released daily and an infinite amount of social media content exists means competing against “everything.”
Building a sustainable community and achieving critical mass requires immense effort. The challenge for any live service game is not just competing against similar titles, but capturing the attention and time of an infinite audience.
In this instance, 2XKO unfortunately did not achieve that necessary level of engagement. Despite the setback, the core belief remains: the foundation was built on a desire to enhance the fighting game scene. The story of 2XKO serves as a reminder that even with great intentions, success in the competitive landscape requires navigating a very high bar.
Nevertheless, the studio is not stopping there. The experience gained from 2XKO is clearly feeding into future endeavors. Development on other, more mysterious projects continues, demonstrating that the drive to innovate and experiment remains strong, even when facing significant hurdles.
