Thick as Thieves content updates are ending
The world of independent gaming is often a rollercoaster of highs and lows, where passionate creative visions crash against the harsh realities of development cycles and market pressures. The journey of Thick As Thieves, an ambitious multiplayer stealth experience launched in May, offers a compelling look at this dynamic environment—a story defined by initial hurdles, industry turbulence, and remarkable resilience.
When the game first hit the market, many felt it arrived just shy of its potential. Some observers noted that the title felt underdeveloped, suggesting it might have benefited from an early access release to allow players to experience the full scope of its vision. Early feedback highlighted concerns over mechanics, such as the specifics of the time-limit system and the absence of key features like rebindable controls at launch, which contributed to a feeling that the game was thin.
The creative team faced more than just gameplay adjustments; they wrestled with the shifting landscape of the gaming industry itself. The stress of development coincided with wider struggles within the sector, leading to difficult decisions about the project’s future.
Unfortunately, these challenges manifested in personnel changes. Following further rounds of layoffs, the team behind Thick As Thieves was drastically reduced, with fewer than ten employees remaining. This reality came with a sobering confirmation from game director Jeff Hickman: “Working in the gaming industry is at times delightful and at other times heartbreaking,” he noted, acknowledging that ongoing development of new content or systems is simply not a viable path for such a small team.
Despite these setbacks, however, the spirit of the project remains alive. OtherSide and their publisher, Megabit, are actively working to ensure that Thick As Thieves remains a playable and engaging experience for its community. Their focus is now on ensuring stability and providing a robust way for players to connect.
The current focus involves rebuilding the game using Peer-to-Peer servers specifically for co-op play. This update promises to preserve the core gameplay flow and experience while eliminating the need for dedicated cloud servers, allowing friends to continue playing together seamlessly. Crucially, solo play remains completely unaffected by this transition.
As we look back, questions naturally arise about the initial pricing. Some speculate that launching at a low price point may have created an impression of desperation rather than reflecting the game’s true value. The narrative suggests that regardless of the cost, Thick As Thieves was inherently designed to find its audience.
Ultimately, the story of the game is one of enduring passion. Whether it achieved massive commercial success or not, the effort put into creating Thick As Thieves demonstrated a commitment that shines through, proving that even when development paths shift and resources dwindle, the drive to bring an innovative experience to life continues.
