The legendary world of shooters got a massive celebration this week as QuakeCon kicked off with a deep dive into the history of one of gaming’s most influential titles: Quake. The event brought together legends and creators, featuring a panel where John Romero and current id studio co-director Marty Stratton celebrated the shooter’s 30th anniversary.

Adding another layer of cultural significance to the celebration was a brief appearance from Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor. Reznor, who famously composed the iconic soundtrack for Quake, shared his perspective on the evolution of gaming and the visceral experience of early shooters.

For Reznor, the connection to the era was profound. He reflected on how revolutionary games like Wolfenstein felt like a radical departure from what he knew about video games at the time. This shift in perspective led him to marvel at the impact of Quake.

“When I first encountered Wolfenstein it felt impossible,” Reznor recalled. “Nothing was like that. It was a radical departure from what I’d known as videogames. I went out and bought a PC just to play it.”

The journey continued with the emergence of Doom, which Reznor described as a game that felt like an explosion in the gaming landscape. He noted that Doom’s technological advancement and raw impact resonated deeply, feeling like a parallel to his own artistic pursuit of expression.

“Jump ahead a few years, Doom comes out, and it was like a bomb went off,” he stated. “It was not only technologically advanced, but there wasn’t anything like that. It felt like no adults were involved, nobody said no, it was free, and it was fantastic.”

This shared experience with the id team solidified a bond between the creators, highlighting how music and gameplay can intersect to create unforgettable cultural artifacts. Reznor expressed gratitude for being part of the Quake team, emphasizing that the game holds up today.

The celebration extended beyond the panel, offering fans a tangible way to commemorate three decades of history. A range of Nine Inch Nails Quake-themed gear was released, including items like an ammo box, t-shirts, hoodies, and keychains, alongside a reissue of the soundtrack on vinyl. These commemorative items underscore the enduring legacy of the franchise, making it accessible for fans looking to celebrate gaming’s most enduring classics.
