Super Mario Sunshine joins Nintendo Switch Online next week
For years, gamers have watched with bated breath, waiting for Nintendo to finally deliver on its promise of retro gaming accessibility. Since launching the Switch Online subscription service nearly a decade ago, fans have been craving access to the beloved library of the GameCube. Now, that wait is slowly, surely paying off.
Nintendo has officially confirmed that one of their most highly requested classic additions is finally coming to Nintendo Switch Online: Super Mario Sunshine. This major expansion deepens the nostalgic well for players looking to revisit the golden age of Nintendo gaming on modern hardware.
The official announcement came with a wink and a nod to the past, promising an experience rooted in classic fun. The message hinted at the excitement: “Dark days loom over Isle Delfino! Clean up a polluted island with FLUDD at your side in Super Mario Sunshine, coming to Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics on Nintendo Switch 2 for #NintendoSwitchOnline + Expansion Pack members on Aug 13!”
This addition is particularly significant given the current catalog. Currently, the NSO library boasts only nine GameCube classics, including highly sought-after titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion, and F-Zero GX. Bringing in Super Mario Sunshine makes the collection even more appealing to retro enthusiasts.
One point of interest for many is how this port will be handled. Since Super Mario Sunshine is already playable on the Switch through the limited-release Mario 3D All-Stars, it will be fascinating to see Nintendo’s approach to adapting the classic experience onto the NSO platform.
The retro expansion doesn’t stop there. In addition to GameCube classics, Nintendo is also decking out Virtual Boy fans with new content. Just arriving on August 4th are two more Virtual Boy games, ZERO RACERS and D-HOPPER, alongside new ‘screen-colour customisation’ features for the Virtual Boy experience.
